  4. Doubling a splinter bid to show strength in the splinter suit is
  5. seldom of much value, since there is little to be gained from the
  6. opening lead of that suit. A better idea is to use the double to
  7. show strength in the highest unbid suit:

  9.                    South  West   North  East
  10.                    1S     Pass   4C     Dbl - heart strength
  11.  
  12.                    South  West   North  East
  13.                    1S     Pass   4H     Dbl - diamond strength
  14.  
  15. These doubles show strength only, not length necessarily.

  17. When the splinter bid is in a suit that partner has bid, the same
  18. principle applies:

  23. East has S-10 H-A76 D-K3 C-1076532. The double may enable West to
  24. bid 5D as a good save against a spade game. At least it will tell
  25. West that it is safe to lead diamonds.

  27. If the doubler later makes a Lightner double of a slam bid, he asks
  28. that the indicated suit not be led; he wants a different lead,
  29. perhaps a suit in which he is void.
